I don’t know about you, But I’m certainly one of many who “let themselves go” over the winter, I mean come on, all that great food during the Holidays, who can resist? All I can say is “Don’t worry” there is usually a fix for some of that.
Of course with a winter like this past one that was mild enough for us all to continue playing year round; packing on the pounds may not be as much an issue? But, if you feel a spring kick start is in order please read on as I hope this may help get you going for the summer Golf season.
In retrospect, a “lay off” will help most anyone who continually stresses over their game or how they have been hitting the ball and perhaps sometimes even their work schedule will get into their head, therefore a “break” usually takes a bit of the pressure off and even re-news your love of the game.
Perhaps give these ideas a try:1) Take a Lesson with your local club Pro. (All local courses have a Pro who will be happy to assist you with the “Swing”
2) Practice your alignment and aim with alignment sticks. (Can be purchased online)

3) Make a list of yourself proclaimed problems during a game. (Mine is extensive)
4) You can research and find drills that relate to your problem online. (So many sites to check that it’s mind numbing)
5) Work your research at home by yourself in your own backyard as often as you wish. (My favorite is “chipping” to a set point and my Dog retrieves the balls, she loves the quality time!)
6) Practice before you play, Put, Chip, Drive if you can at the course before tee time as it helps you to warm up the muscles that have been dormant during the winter months.
7) Garb those hot new clubs you got for Christmas and head for the course to have Fun!
Some other things that may help:
1) Video analysis of your swing. This will assist you to avoid pitfalls; also will help save hours of aggravation for you in getting ready for a very short golf season.
2) Take a Lesson with the Club Pro in a One-on-one format. He or she will assist you in ball position, grip, body position and even approach to the golf ball. For most serious golfers, fixing one problem can also fix many concerns.
3) Some high course pro shops and larger chain stores are now offering custom “fitting” of a high end club. Drivers and Irons are not all alike, so many of today’s golfers are now moving to custom fit and adjusted Drivers and Iron sets. This is costly in some cases but will offer relief from the club too short and even then, “I have to choke up to reach” days of old.
4) Be mentally tough when you play. If you’re like me and hit a few shots poorly during a round, forget about it and go play and enjoy yourself, you’re not on tour buddy. Thinking too much about what you are doing is a mental game we all face, try to be very aware of what you’re thinking and always keep it under control, the mental game has ruined more than one round for most any golfer. Hey just like in Happy Gilmore the movie, Happy was playing terrible, then his coach told him to: “Go to your happy place, now putt “and he made that putt feeling less stressed about the round. Now that may sound ridiculous to you, but it really does work to take your mind off what just happened during your last shot. So to close this first article of the year, summer is coming, so is the golf season, so start getting ready to play by mentally and physically preparing yourself, but always keep in mind one easy saying: “JUST HAVE FUN”.
